Field observations by Ranger Warden Elara Moonshadow
Classification: Herbivore
Size: Large
Habitat: Forests and meadows
Threat Level: Low
Description
The noble red deer graces forests and meadows throughout Aedelore. Stags carry magnificent antlers that grow larger each year, shed and regrown annually. Their autumn rutting calls echo through misty mornings.
Behavior
Herds led by dominant stags during rut, otherwise by experienced does. Graze at dawn and dusk, resting during day. Flee from predators rather than fight, though stags will defend harems and does protect fawns.
Ecological Role
Primary prey for large predators. Grazing maintains meadow ecosystems. Shed antlers provide minerals for smaller animals. Valued by hunters for meat, hide, and antlers.
