Thief/Rogue

Thieves and rogues operate in the spaces between law and shadow - the back alleys, the locked rooms, the conversations that happen after the tavern doors close. They are not simply criminals, though many have earned that label. A rogue is anyone who has learned that the world rewards the quick and the clever more reliably than the strong, and who has built a life around that principle. They pick locks, lift purses, talk their way past guards, and vanish into crowds. Where a warrior meets a problem head-on, a rogue finds the side door.

Skills and Methods

A rogue's training is informal and practical. Most learn their trade on the streets, apprenticed to older thieves or forced by circumstance to develop the instincts that keep them fed and free. They excel in stealth and sleight of hand, moving through darkness as comfortably as others walk in daylight. Lockpicking, trap detection, forgery, and the subtle art of misdirection are the tools of their trade. In a fight, rogues favour speed over strength - a well-placed dagger in the right moment does more than a battleaxe swung too late.

What makes a skilled rogue dangerous is not just their hands but their eyes. They notice things others miss: the guard who always looks left, the floorboard that sounds different, the merchant whose smile does not reach his eyes. This talent for observation makes them surprisingly useful outside of their usual profession - many a rogue has saved a party not by picking a lock but by spotting the ambush before it closed.

Place in the World

Rogues thrive wherever there is wealth, trade, and enough people to disappear among. The bustling markets of Avenstoff are a natural home for those who live by quick fingers, and the docks of Holywell harbour their share of smugglers and fixers. Some rogues operate alone; others belong to loose networks that trade favours and information across city lines. Those drawn to the Creed of Shadows find a philosophy that mirrors their own - that true power lies in what is hidden, not what is displayed. Respectable society looks down on rogues, and their low standing reflects this. But when a door needs opening, a secret needs finding, or a problem needs solving without anyone knowing it was solved at all, even the most pious lord knows who to ask.
