Basilisk
Type: Magical reptile
Habitat: Ruins, deep caves
Threat Level: Extreme
Description
Basilisks are eight-legged reptiles with the dreaded ability to petrify living creatures with their gaze. They are typically the size of large dogs, with scales that shift between green and gray and eyes that glow with malevolent golden light.
Behavior
Basilisks are territorial predators, claiming abandoned structures or cave systems as their lairs. Their petrification ability means they rarely go hungry-victims remain preserved until the basilisk is ready to eat. They are not aggressive beyond their territory but will pursue intruders relentlessly.
Combat
The cardinal rule of basilisk combat: never meet their gaze. Mirrors can reflect their petrifying stare back at them, and fighting with averted eyes-while difficult-is possible for trained warriors. Killing the basilisk restores recently petrified victims; those left too long are lost forever.
Lore
Basilisk eyes retain their power even after death and are highly valued by alchemists and dark mages. This has led to a dangerous trade in basilisk parts, with hunters risking petrification for substantial rewards.
