The Doctrine of Emanations
Name: The Illuminated Order of the Silver Dawn
Deity: The Black Sun, through the six Aspects
Beliefs: The Doctrine of Emanations teaches that all creation flows from a single source - the Black Sun - whose original light descends through the six Aspects (Taninsam, Tanin'iver, Leviathan, Tiamat, Tatsu, and Tohu) and crystallizes into the material world of Aedelore. The Aspects are not separate gods but refractions of one undivided radiance, each carrying a different quality of the original fire. Within every mortal soul burns a fragment of that same light - the spark that connects all living things to the source from which they came.
The purpose of existence, according to the Doctrine, is the return - the gathering of scattered light back toward its origin. Every act of wisdom, every moment of genuine understanding, thins the barriers between the soul and the divine. This is not a faith of obedience or petition. It is a faith of awakening.
Teachings:
The Cascade of Light: Reality is structured in layers, each further from the source and denser than the last. The Seven Veils - Flesh, Passion, Thought, Self, Time, Form, and Light - separate the mortal world from the divine. The initiate's task is to pierce these veils through contemplation, discipline, and lived experience.
As Above, So Below: The structure of the cosmos is mirrored in the structure of the soul. To know oneself truly is to know the universe. Self-knowledge is therefore not indulgence but sacred duty.
The Paradox of the Black Sun: The source creates through darkness and illuminates through absence. What appears empty is full; what appears separate is unified. The initiate must learn to hold contradiction without flinching.
Practices:
Veil Meditations: Initiates undertake structured contemplative exercises designed to thin each veil in turn. The first three veils - Flesh, Passion, and Thought - are considered accessible to any dedicated seeker. The fourth veil, Self, is the great threshold that most never cross.
The Naming Rite: Advanced practitioners study the True Names of things - the original words spoken when creation cascaded from the source. Speaking a True Name grants insight into the essential nature of the thing named. This practice is guarded carefully, as misuse of True Names can be dangerous.
The Silver Dawn Vigil: Once each season, the Order gathers before dawn to sit in silence and watch the first light break the horizon - a symbolic reenactment of the original emanation. No words are spoken. No prayers are offered. The vigil is the prayer.
Hierarchy: The Order is led by the Illuminated, a small council of elders who have pierced at least four veils. Below them are the Seekers - full initiates who study, teach, and are sent into the world to deepen their understanding through experience. New students are called Aspirants and must pass the first veil before being accepted as Seekers. The Order has no formal priesthood. Authority comes from depth of understanding, not from title or appointment. The main seat of the Order is the great library of Rivermount, though small circles of practitioners exist in scattered places across Aedelore.
Advantage: +1 Religion, +1 Insight
Disadvantage: May not seek personal power or wealth
