Void Corruption
This document was written as a warning, sealed by the Conclave of Wardens, and placed in the restricted archives of every major temple in Aedelore. It describes how the Void claims souls-not through conquest but through corruption. May those who read it recognize the signs before it is too late.
- Set down by Warden-Commander Aldris Voidbane, who witnessed the fall of Amber''s Call and survived to tell the tale
The Stages of Corruption
Know then that the Void does not conquer through force alone. Its true weapon is corruption-the slow, patient unmaking of all that a soul once was, until nothing remains but a hollow vessel for the darkness to fill.
Void corruption progresses through stages, each more terrible than the last:
The Whisper - It begins with thoughts that seem to come from nowhere. Doubts about loved ones. Suspicions without cause. A growing certainty that the world is fundamentally wrong, that something essential is missing. The afflicted often do not recognize these thoughts as foreign; they believe them to be their own insights, their own awakening to hidden truths.
The Hunger - Next comes a desire that cannot be satisfied. It may manifest as greed, as ambition, as lust for power or knowledge. Whatever form it takes, it grows until it consumes all other concerns. The afflicted begin to sacrifice relationships, principles, and eventually their very humanity in pursuit of this hunger that can never be filled.
The Seeing - In this stage, the afflicted begin to perceive the Void directly. They see shadows move when nothing moves. They hear whispers in silence. They feel presences in empty rooms. Many go mad at this stage; those who do not become convinced that they have been granted special insight, that they alone understand the true nature of reality.
The Turning - The final stage, from which there is no return. The soul becomes a gateway, a crack through which the Void can seep into reality. The body may continue to function, but the person who once inhabited it is gone, replaced by something that wears their face and speaks with their voice but serves only the hunger of the endless dark.
Vectors of Corruption
The Void cannot simply reach into a healthy soul. It requires a point of entry-a moment of weakness, a crack in the spirit through which its influence can flow. The most common vectors include:
Forbidden Knowledge - Certain texts and rituals deliberately open the reader to Void influence. The Conclave of Wardens maintains lists of such materials, but new ones are always being discovered or created.
Void-Touched Objects - Items that have been exposed to concentrated Void energy can carry corruption like a disease. The cursed artifacts of fallen civilizations are particularly dangerous.
Proximity to Breaches - Where the boundary between reality and Void has worn thin, mere presence can begin the corruption process. The ruins of Amber''s Call are such a place.
Emotional Devastation - Grief, rage, despair-these create cracks in the soul through which the Void''s whispers can enter. Those who have suffered great trauma are especially vulnerable.
Signs of the Afflicted
For it is written: know your enemy by the marks they leave upon their servants. Those corrupted by the Void often display certain signs:
Their shadows move wrongly, sometimes a heartbeat behind their movements, sometimes reaching toward light sources rather than away. Their eyes, in certain lights, seem to contain depths that go too far, as if something vast lurks behind them. They speak of "understanding" and "seeing clearly" while their actions grow increasingly destructive. They cannot bear the presence of sacred flames, particularly those consecrated to Taninsam.
Let those who recognize these signs act swiftly, for in the early stages, corruption can still be cleansed. But once the Turning is complete, only mercy remains-the mercy of a swift end, before the corrupted soul can spread its darkness further.
